HafenCity Hamburg GmbH at Expo Real 2022: Hamburg’s future

HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is presenting the full breadth of innovative urban development at Expo Real in Munich. From October 4–6, 2022, Europe’s biggest inner‐city urban development project is the main partner on the Hamburg pavilion (B2.430)
The EXPO Real real estate trade fair has a special significance for HafenCity Hamburg GmbH. High-level visitors from the real estate and wider business, from public administration and from politics come to find out about individual projects and overarching urban development topics as well as to look for opportunities to get involved in the attractive HafenCity, Billebogen, Grasbrook or Science City location, whether as designers, developers, financiers or investors. Alongside the Hamburg Metropolitan Region joint pavilion with the HafenCity model at its heart, the Hamburg.HafenCity.Reception on the stand in October 5 at 11.00 have become established as the key Hamburg event at the fair, attracting participants from far and wide.
Implementing major urban development initiatives and creating new city neighborhoods is a mammoth task. The need for management is high and the complex tasks range from forward-looking planning and intensive management of processes to bringing together a wide range of players. In HafenCity, Grasbook, Billebogen and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is responsible for four major urban development initiatives in Hamburg with their own particular location and development constraints. From the perspective of special ecological and social responsibilities, all of the developments significantly define the path to the livable city of tomorrow.
The four urban development initiatives are central locations for technical and social innovations in the fields of health, new materials, climate and energy, mobility and digitalization, setting new standards in Europe and beyond.
Grasbrook: Green city by the water
The new Grasbrook neighborhood presents the unique opportunity to fundamentally rethink all aspects of urban development and innovation processes in an integrated way. What today is a port area with almost entirely sealed surfaces will in future become a neighborhood characterized by in-novation. In the coming years, a park landscape and about 3,000 privately financed and publicly subsidized apartments for cooperatives and joint building ventures will be created in the whole area. Additionally, the new neighborhood offer potential for 16,000 workplaces.
In the future, new working environments will be developed and tested here – from co-working and space for start-ups, flexible and digital office concepts to research and development as well as urban manufacturing.
Billebogen: “Made in Hamburg” manufacturing
Three neighborhoods characterize Billebogen’s profile. For the Bille basin in the northeast, the focus is on urban manufacturing with a possible emphasis on biotechnology and medical engineering. With the new intermodal rail station, a compact business location is being created around two kilometers from the city center, easily accessible by public transport and by car. Urban manufacturing and industry 4.0 are envisaged here as well as manufacturing-related services, start-ups, maker spaces, creative uses and think tanks. At the Elbbrücken City Gateway, demolition of an oversized freeway intersection will unlock new space potential for developing office, commercial and cultural uses.
The juxtaposition of historical existing buildings and innovative, flexible newbuilds generates an inspiring environment. This opens up an even greater oppor tunity to create new jobs and benefit from neighborhood synergies with the highly urban Elbbrücken neighborhood and the future Grasbrook innovation district.
Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld: Shop window for strong innovation
Science City is one of the most ambitious future projects for Hamburg in the coming decades. For the first time, Hamburg sees an integrated development of knowledge, science and research, business, innovation and living being put into practice. The city is pursuing the goal of intelligently linking existing qualities in Bahrenfeld and new developments and bringing them together to form a new whole. At the same time, Hamburg aims to strengthen and expand its profile as a city of science.
In the immediate vicinity of the Altona Volkspark, numerous affordable homes for people from varying backgrounds will be created alongside new, innovative workplaces, cultural and sport facilities, and social infrastructure. At the same time, the emphasis is on the development of the Altona Innovation Park and the expansion and consolidation of the Bahrenfeld Science Campus with Universität Hamburg and further research institutes as well as the further development and integration of the DESY research center.

Europe’s largest inner-city urban development project is a blueprint for the new European city on the waterfront. On an area of 127 ha, a lively new city is taking shape, closely combining workplace and residential uses, education, culture and leisure, tourism and retailing – in a way quite unlike downtowns dominated by offices and shops.
In addition to its central location, HafenCity is characterized by a high level of urbanity, the ecological sustainability and technological innovation of its buildings and open spaces, an intensive social mix, and a very high overall amenity value thanks to attractive public parks, squares and promenades. The aims of HafenCity development are very extensive. A new city area by the water is to be defined through its urban layout, architecture, inherent uses and identities, as well as emotionally. From Elbphilharmonie in the west to the new city gateway on the easternmost point of the quarter, next to the Elbe bridges, HafenCity is treading new paths.
