Kesselhaus

A presentation of everything currently happening between the Elbe bridges and Kehrwiederspitze promontory is on view in the InfoCenter in Kesselhaus at Sandtorkai 30.

Kesselhaus was once the boiler house that powered the Speicherstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015. Today the red-brick building built in 1886/87 shows an exciting blend of past and future: the focus of the ex-hibition is a highly detailed eight by four-metre model of HafenCity on a scale of 1:500.

It reveals the dimensions of the new urban district, showing how it integrates into the city and how far the project has progressed. Like the real neighbourhoods, the contours of miniature HafenCityare becoming more concrete: plain wooden blocks represent future construction projects, whilst existing or planned buildings display authentic cubature and façade designs.

In addition, information is available on core aspects of the new urban district, such as its combination of living, work and leisure, or flood protection. The well-trained staff members are open to questions or more detailed discussion.

Kesselhaus is also the starting point for a variety of tours around HafenCity. This striking building with its two filigree chimney replicas exactly marks the threshold between old and new: across the street from the historic Speicherstadt visitors arrive in the middle of a 21st century urban centre
